Tauranga is the smallest and most affordable of New Zealand's three main cities, and has been the country's fastest growing for years. It runs on the port, kiwi exports and tourism along the sunny Bay of Plenty coast. Buses cover the city and the Mount, winters are mild, summers warm, and Tauranga gets more sunshine than anywhere else in the country.

WHERE TO LIVE
City, beach, or further south?
Tauranga has three broad zones for international students, split by the harbour bridge and the southward stretch of beach. Where you land depends on your budget and how close to the surf you want to wake up.
City Centre
Tauranga CBD · Greerton · Bethlehem. From NZ$270/week. Walking distance to most language schools, the waterfront, and the bus hub for the port and the Mount.
Mount Maunganui
Mount Maunganui · Bayfair · Pilot Bay. From NZ$320/week. Across the harbour bridge - beach community, surf at the door, the Mount climb on your morning run.
Papamoa
Papamoa · Pāpāmoa East. From NZ$240/week. Further south along the beach: newer neighborhoods, lower rents, 20 minutes by bus to the Mount, and 30 to the center.

What are you going to do here?
Work
Cheapest of NZ's three.
Tauranga is the most affordable of New Zealand's three major cities: rent and food cost less than in Auckland or Queenstown. Cafés, shops, and the port hire year-round, and the kiwi harvest (March to May) is the peak season.
LIFESTYLE
Climb the Mount before sunset.
Mount Maunganui is part of the daily routine: locals climb it in the morning and at sunset. The beach below is a year-round surf spot. Coromandel an hour to the north, Rotorua and its hot pools to the south. Over 2,400 hours of sunshine a year, more than anywhere else in the country.
Community
You'll get to know the same faces.
The international student community is smaller than Auckland's but growing fast: Tauranga has been New Zealand's fastest growing city for years. The Latin community is young, but plans come together quickly: within a week you'll be surfing with your crew.
