Byron Bay is the smallest study destination in Australia, on the north coast of New South Wales. Famous for its alternative culture: yoga, wellness, organic markets and art. The economy runs entirely on tourism, hospitality, surf and festivals, and the subtropical climate is warm all year round. Life moves slowly here, and the line between work and beach barely exists.

WHERE TO LIVE
Beach, south, or hinterland?
Byron Bay is small enough that its three student zones are all within a 15-minute drive of Main Beach. Where you land depends on your budget and whether you want the surf at your door or a cheaper rent inland.
Town Centre
Byron CBD · Main Beach · Belongil. From $350 AUD/week. Walking distance to Main Beach, the cafés, and the festival venues. Byron's most expensive zone but everything's at the door.
South Byron
Suffolk Park · Tallow Beach · Broken Head. From $300 AUD/week. Quieter surf, cheaper rent than the centre, 10-minute drive or bus into town. Locals' favourite zone.
Interior
Mullumbimby · Lennox Head · Bangalow. From $250 AUD/week. Cheaper inland towns 15–20 minutes from Byron, with cafés, markets and a bus into town.

What are you going to do here?
Work
Tourist-town hospitality, every month.
Byron Bay runs on tourism: hospitality, surf school assistants, market stalls, wellness studio reception. Summer (December–February) is the biggest hiring push, the festival season (Bluesfest in April, Splendour in July) doubles the demand, and the local population doubles for any big weekend. Less student-job competition than Sydney or Melbourne.
LIFESTYLE
Surf, lighthouse, and Wollumbin views.
Byron is built around the beach: surf year-round at The Pass, Wategos, and Tallow, the Cape Byron lighthouse walk takes you to the easternmost point of mainland Australia, and Wollumbin (Mount Warning) is 40 minutes inland for a sacred sunrise hike. Splendour in the Grass and Bluesfest bring the festival season; the rest of the year is dolphins, whales (June–November), and warm-water beaches.
Community
Everybody knows everybody.
Everyone knows everyone. Byron is a town of around 9,000 people. The community is mostly young and Australian, and international students are few. That means real immersion: you mix with Australians from day one and settle in faster.
